Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street. Rokkakudo Temple is seen looking northwest from the southeastern side of the temple grounds. The official name is Shiunzan Chohoji. It is an independent temple of the Tendai Sect. The common name Rokkakudo (Hexagonal Hall) comes from the hexagonal shape of the main hall. The main hall shown here was built in 1872. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The photograph was probably taken around the same time as photograph #2748. Kotokuin Temple began to collect donations for the reconstruction of the temple in 1879. However, a change in public opinion caused the plan to be suspended in 1889. It is documented that the donated money was later used to enlarge the temple grounds, to plant trees, and to build rest areas. Wisteria trellis at a teahouse,the Nakasendo Road

Wisteria blossoms on Nakasendo probably refers to the wisteria at Ushijima (present-day Ushijima in Kasukabe City, Saitama Prefecture), but this is not certain. If so, however, this would be the Shingon Sect Rengein Temple grounds where wisterias, said to have been planted by Kobo Daishi (the founder of the Shingon Sect), still can be found today. The wisteria trees are 1,200 years old, and the plot is some 700 square meters in area. The trees were designated a National Natural Monument in 1928. A five-story pagoda at Tennoji Temple,Ueno

This five-story pagoda was built by Doi Toshikatsu, feudal lord of Furukawa Castle, in 1639. The stone lanterns in the foreground line the approach of Toshogu Shrine. The main hall is to the left. The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

Sanmon gate of Tozenji Temple viewed from the temple grounds (opposite from photograph #3420). Since one of the leaning pines has been cut down, this photograph was taken after #3420, probably at the beginning of the Meiji Period. The sea coast came up to the gate at that time. At present, due to landfill, the coast is located at a greater distance. According to Tokyo Annai (Tokyo Information), Tozenji Temple belongs to the Myoshinji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism and was built in 1610. Shinkoji Temple

The Omon (Great Gate) rebuilt in 1827 and the Great Buddha built in 1760. Probably dated in the mid-Meiji Period, the photograph captures the solemn atmosphere of the temple. Shinkoji is a famous temple of Buddhist Jishu Sect located in Hyogo Ward. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

This is the same photograph as #2252. Two flat rocks are placed in front of the pedestal. A map of the temple grounds dated 1899 shows four stones placed at the corners surrounding the statue, suggesting that the foundation stones of the former Great Buddha hall were still in their original locations. Daibutsu (the Great Buddha) of Kamakura

The stone cleansing basin in the foreground was donated in 1749. At present it is situated at the entrance of the temple grounds along with its roof. There are two flat rocks placed in front of the statue. The symmetrical position of these rocks suggests that they were used as foundation stones for the former Great Buddha Hall. Ueno Park

Ueno Park was originally a part of the grounds of Kaneiji Temple. However, most of the buildings were destroyed as a result of battles during the Boshin War. It was designated as the first park in Japan in 1873. There are 900 someiyoshino cherry trees planted here. Ishiyamadera Temple

The Ishiyama temple in Otsu city. The founder is Todaiji Ryoben. It used to be a training place of the Kegon Sect and a subtemple of Todaiji, but later it changed to the Shingon Sect. It is the 13th fudasho (a temple where amulets are distributed to pilgrims) of the 33 pilgrimages of western Japan. Also the autumn moon of Ishiyama is one of the 8 scenic spots of Omi. The Mikagedo, seen from the grounds, is shaped in a square and the roof is in thatched a single layer of cypress bark. Benten Pond,Eikan-do Temple

The head temple of the Jodo Sect, Nishiyama Zenrinji, in the Eikandoji in the Sakyo district, Kyoto City. The lake is surrounded by trees in the spacious temple grounds and has a bridge. At the foot of the lake is a priest sitting, and in the fore a parked rickshaw.
